First Meeting, Nov 9, 2003

The first meeting exceeded all expectations. We had a great turnout and everyone had a good time. Lots of new contacts were made as well as catching up with old friends. One goal for the meeting was to make some decisions about how to proceed and this is what was discussed.

We decided to meet every other month at Woodcraft and we will be working on scheduling demos and tutorials that will be of interest to everyone. On the "off" month, we will schedule something like a shop tour and/or dinner to get people together and have fun.

We will continue to use our Yahoo Group to coordinate activities and discussion, but a dedicated website has value and is being pursued.

Julius Borges spoke about the Newport Guitar Festival happening August 6-8, 2004. This is a great event for players, music fans and builders. A world-class guitar show in our own backyard, featuring guitars by several of our members!

Don Williams and Mike Mahar had everyone thinking about how to accurately cut binding ledges. Their jigs were well designed, easy to use and the results looked excellent. Very consistent with clean binding and purfling installed on the Williams SJ. Mike provided handouts which detailed the construction of the binding jig.

It was great to see & hear guitars built by members.

  • Al Carruth & Steve Connor brought beautiful nylon stringed instruments
  • Kevin Cronin displayed one of his fine archtops destined for the Music Emporium
  • Vivian Ecker's 00-12 fret sounded wonderful and looked great!
  • John Osthoff admires Rick McGuire's beautiful Ziricote topped electric. Rick also brought some great looking sets of Tazmanian Blackwood.

I apologize if I have forgotten anything...
